Maps as Diagrams

These Mississippi Meander Maps are as much maps as diagrams, but they quite beautiful give a clear sense of how the river has changed over time.

Probably one of the most successful and famous diagrams is the London Transit Map (Philadelphia may have actually been first?). I think a more effective name for this type of diagram is "information graphics". Though it may not be as accurate as a usual map (by our standards), the information is based on perception and is very easy to read.
