Testing: film strips

I've decided to get my hands on some film negatives, which are made of plastic and covered in an emulsion layer that is light sensitive. This week I focused on folding and gluing techniques to see how something stiffer than paper would react. The imaging properties of the film could lead to a wide range of patterning experimentation in the future.

The curled nature of the film made it fun to use in a pop up book so long as the film was not folded too hard upon closing the book.:

Trying to make honeycomb yielded some problems with the shape. The glue also came undone very easily.

  1. Hi Diana,

I like the idea that you could "develop" your piece with a pattern after it is put together. It has a great performative quality to it. Perhaps try some of the pop up book techniques of slots, slits, and tabs rather than relying on glue, which would affect your pattern anyway. Any luck on finding bigger film sheets?
